World Drowning Prevention Day 2026, Promoting Water Safety, Saving Lives

UNITRI proudly conducted a World Drowning Prevention Day Awareness Session focused on promoting drowning prevention, water safety, and lifesaving awareness within the community. The initiative aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge on rescue awareness, aquatic first aid, and safe response during water emergencies.

UNITRI proudly marked World Drowning Prevention Day with an engaging Water Safety Awareness Session, bringing together more than 30 children and adults to learn essential drowning prevention, rescue awareness, and lifesaving skills.

Led by Mr. Sanoj Thisera, Water Safety Specialist, First Aid Instructor, ASCA Level 3 Coach, and UAE Swimming Federation Certified Professional - participants learned valuable water safety tips, basic rescue techniques, and how to respond during water emergencies. Everyone also had the chance to practice using rescue equipment and experience both victim and rescuer scenarios under the guidance of Coach Sanoj, Coach Marky, and Coach Jenny.

The session wrapped up with a CPR demonstration for drowning victims—perfect timing, as some of our members had just completed a CPR/AED course the weekend before, giving them a chance to put their new knowledge into practice.

We also presented a Plaque of Appreciation to Mr. Sanoj Thisera before ending the day with group photos and a fellowship over food and refreshments, generously sponsored by Thai Coco, Mother Jo, Jonalyn, Abbie, Ogie, and Gerard.

A huge thank you to Chairman Coach Alex, Mother Jo, the Swim Team led by Coach Marky, Kap Gecz, the Admin Team, our volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who joined us and made this event a success.

Together, we’re building a safer, stronger, and more prepared community—both in and out of the water.

Building a Heart-Safe Community: UNITRI Members Take Part in Free CPR & AED Training

Building a Heart-Safe Community: UNITRI Members Take Part in Free CPR & AED Training

When a cardiac emergency occurs, every second counts. Immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the timely use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) can significantly increase a person's chances of survival before emergency medical services arrive.

To help equip residents with these life-saving skills, Dubai has launched two major free initiatives—the nationwide Community Readiness program and the Dubai Heart Safe City movement led by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). Both initiatives aim to empower everyday citizens to respond confidently during the critical first minutes of a medical emergency.

In support of these efforts, UNITRI organized the registration of its members for the Free CPR & AED Training, encouraging more individuals to become prepared and confident first responders.

On July 18, 2026, a total of 23 UNITRI members participated in the two-hour training session, where they learned essential CPR techniques, proper AED operation, and the importance of acting quickly during cardiac emergencies.

Why Members Joined

Every participant had their own reason for signing up, but they all shared one common goal—to learn skills that could one day save a life. For Cheska, the decision to attend was driven by a desire to be better prepared for emergencies.

As a community leader, I want to be more prepared to help the people around me, especially during our outdoor activities where people are often pushing themselves and dealing with challenging weather.”

Why CPR/AED Training Matters

A Coach's Perspective

As someone who regularly guides and looks after others, Coach Alex believes that being prepared to respond to emergencies is part of being a responsible leader.

It equips me to respond confidently during a cardiac emergency, where every second can save a life. It is essential to provide immediate care until medical professionals arrive. It helps to protect not only my family or athletes but anyone in need.”

A Member's Perspective

For Joey, CPR and AED training is an important investment that benefits every member of the community.

Oftentimes, we hesitate to do something because we are afraid. That fear emanates from lack of knowledge and proper training. We want to save lives, but we are not properly informed and trained. Being a member of a community that endures intense training in running, swimming, and cycling, it is very essential that this training is conducted for its members. The environment and the nature of the activities require it. We can save lives if we are trained in it and equipped with the right knowledge.”

A Valuable Takeaway

One lesson can make a lasting impact. Cheska reflected on the knowledge and experience that stood out most during the training.

My biggest takeaway was learning that staying calm and knowing what to do in an emergency can make a big difference. It gave me more confidence to act quickly and help someone when they need it most.”

A New Perspective

Ashley shared how the training changed the way she views emergency situations and prepared her to respond with greater confidence.

This training has given me a more grounded perspective—the idea of an emergency and responding to one feels less daunting after all the knowledge the training has imparted. Because of that, my confidence in my capability to help another in cardiac arrest has grown tremendously. I now believe in myself to not freeze up and panic if such an emergency occurred.”

Putting Knowledge into Action

Learning CPR and AED is only the first step. Joey explained how he plans to use these life-saving skills in his daily life and workplace.

I felt that I have an obligation to the people around me to do something in the right way whenever a situation like this arises. We don’t have a medically trained professional in the family; thus, getting this training is a relief. At least if an emergency happens, I have firsthand knowledge that could save their lives.”

A Message to Future Participants

Beyond gaining life-saving skills, the participants hope their experience will inspire others to take the same step. For LA, CPR and AED training is not just about learning a procedure—it is about being prepared to make a meaningful difference when someone's life is at stake.

Question: What would you say to someone who is considering taking this training, especially young adults?

I really appreciate that they are willing to train people on how to administer CPR and use an AED for the purpose of saving lives. With the increasing number of cardiovascular emergencies and drowning incidents caused by unpreparedness, these skills are becoming more important than ever. I also believe that having the knowledge and ability to save someone’s life gives me a strong sense of purpose. Being able to help someone in a life-threatening situation would bring a deep sense of fulfillment, satisfaction, and achievement.”

To conclude, LA summed up the entire experience in just one sentence.

Overall… My experience was great, and the training highlighted the importance of knowing the correct procedures and responding confidently, ethically, and appropriately in an emergency.

Our members’ experience serves as a reminder that anyone can learn the skills needed to respond in an emergency, and that being prepared today could mean saving a life tomorrow.

Although Coach K is already CPR and AED certified, he still encourages all members—including those who already hold a certification—to attend refresher training. According to him, one of the biggest reasons is to keep knowledge and skills up to date. He also noted that many coaches may have been certified as first aiders years ago but still hesitate or lack confidence when faced with a real emergency. By attending refresher courses every two years, participants have the opportunity to review proper techniques, stay current with best practices, and become more comfortable and confident in responding to emergency situations.

So, if you were unable to attend, another Free CPR & AED Training is scheduled for August 1, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. We encourage all members—whether you are learning CPR and AED for the first time or renewing your existing certification—to take advantage of this valuable opportunity. Investing a few hours to refresh your knowledge today could make a life-saving difference when someone needs your help tomorrow.

World Aquatics Day 2026

UniTri Makes a Splash for World Aquatics Day with a 3KM Open Water Swim

Goggles down. Swim on.
On July 5, 2026, UniTri celebrated World Aquatics Day with a sunrise-free but equally beautiful morning at Kite Beach, bringing together swimmers, triathletes, and friends for a memorable 3KM open water swim filled with grit, smiles, and community spirit.

The event welcomed nearly 70 participants from UniTri and the wider endurance community, with swimmers joining from FRU, FIT, BMA, TSS, Torpedos, Tribu Mananakbo, and even a dedicated team who travelled all the way from Abu Dhabi. Different teams, one passion: the love for the water.

The day started early at 5:00 AM, as UniTri marshals, volunteers, and members prepared the venue, with Thai Coco, our Official Hydration Partner, making sure everyone stayed refreshed and hydrated after the swim.

By 5:30 AM, swimmers started arriving at the shore, where Team Captain Gecz managed registration and attendance to ensure everyone was accounted for before taking on the challenge.

The morning opened with a prayer led by Swim Lead Alfred, followed by opening remarks from UniTri Chairman Coach Alex Macalinao, who also joined the swim as one of the pacers. Head Swim Coach Marky Diva then led the swim briefing, covering safety reminders, the route, and support plans.

At 6:15 AM, it was time to hit the water.

With fair skies, a 31°C air temperature, and calm waters at around 34°C, swimmers enjoyed ideal conditions for the 3KM challenge. Keeping everyone safe along the way were Ron Valdez on kayak support, Joy Chicano on the paddleboard, and Coach Marky on another paddleboard, making sure swimmers had the support and hydration they needed.

One special moment captured the true spirit of UniTri: former Team Captain Yvonne Heruela and current Team Captain Gecz swimming side by side, a perfect reminder that leadership, friendship, and passion continue from one generation to the next.

By 8:00 AM, swimmers completed the course and returned to shore, welcomed by Joey, the Maca Kids, and Fatima, who were ready with smiles, encouragement, and hydration.

And of course, no UniTri gathering is complete without good food and great conversations. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal lovingly prepared by Mother Jocelyn, ending the morning exactly how every UniTri event ends, with happy faces and full hearts.

World Aquatics Day was more than just a swim. It was a celebration of friendship, teamwork, and the community that makes every kilometer worth it.

From the first splash to the final bite, UniTri proved once again that we are not just training partners—we are family.

Happy World Aquatics Day from the UniTri Family! See you on the next adventure.

Colnago x UniTri Abu Dhabi: Bringing the Endurance Community Together

The day began well before sunrise as the UniTri community made the journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for a special collaboration with Colnago. By 5:30 AM, athletes, coaches, and volunteers had gathered, ready to share a morning dedicated to movement, learning, and building connections through sport.

The event opened with simultaneous cycling and running sessions. Our runners were led by Coach Majel and Coach Gecz, who guided the group through an enjoyable 5km run while encouraging athletes of all abilities. On the cycling side, Malen and Cheska led the ride for 27km in 51mins, with the invaluable support of our bike lead, Wynel, ensuring every participant enjoyed a safe, smooth, and memorable experience on the roads of Abu Dhabi.

After the ride and run, everyone regrouped for a high-energy circuit-training bootcamp led by Coach K. The session challenged all 28 participants with a variety of functional exercises designed to improve strength, endurance, coordination, and mobility. It was demanding, but the encouragement shared throughout the workout reminded everyone that progress is always better when achieved together.

The morning concluded with an informative bike workshop led by Lynsey, where participants learned essential cycling skills that every rider should know. From preparing the right equipment before a ride to confidently repairing a punctured tire, the hands-on session gave both new and experienced cyclists practical knowledge they can take on every future adventure.

Behind every great event is a dedicated team working quietly in the background. Throughout the morning, Fatima captured the energy of the event through her photography, preserving the smiles, determination, teamwork, and unforgettable moments that defined the day.

What made this event special was bringing the UniTri community from Dubai to Abu Dhabi to connect through a shared passion for endurance sports. More than just a training session, it was a morning of learning, teamwork, and building lasting friendships.

A heartfelt thank you to Colnago, our coaches, ride leaders, volunteers, and all the participants who made the event such a success. Your energy and enthusiasm continue to strengthen the UniTri community.

Here's to many more rides, runs, and adventures together!
